The Superwoman myth
By Alia

When I started my business, I thought I’d be quite chilled about it. Instagram is full of business-owning mums who seem to have found the perfect work-life balance. I wanted a business that was heart-centred, genuine to me and flexible enough to fit around family life. A few months in, I realised my expectations had collided with one of motherhood’s biggest myths: the Superwoman.
Social media would have us believe that creating content, building a business, running a home and raising children can all be achieved with a few clever apps and enough determination. Instead, I found myself feeling pressure to do everything myself.
The image of the modern Superwoman is everywhere: successful business owner, organised parent, household manager with glossy hair and a clean car. What I’ve learned is that my greatest strength isn’t doing everything – it’s knowing when not to.
I stopped trying to be an expert in everything and started asking for help. I outsourced my website, invested in branding support and connected with people whose skills were stronger than my own. Not only did this save me time, but it also helped me build a fantastic support network.
What I know now is the Supermum businesswoman can exist. The myth is that we must do it all alone. There is no need. Find your own superhero side-kicks and let them make the journey a little sweeter.
